I am delighted to announce the introduction to my practice of the Proteifine Diet, which is proving hugely successful in clinic. The clients who tend to do best on a plan like this are those people who feel they need a really simple protocol to follow because they are short on time and have struggled before to fit healthy eating into their busy lives. It’s just one of the options I offer clients who come to work with me on a weight loss coaching programme, and I am one of only a very few nutrition practitioners across the country who are able to offer this product. Here are a few commonly asked questions about the diet.
What is the Proteifine Diet?
The Proteifine Diet has been in the UK since 2010 and is hugely popular in Europe and South America, and I have been trialling it with clients recently with fantastic results. I can confidently say that I have never come across a more effective approach to weight loss.
The Proteifine Diet is a protein-based, low carbohydrate weight loss programme that promotes fast but healthy fat loss. Proteifine, developed by Ysonut Laboratories, was launched in France almost 20 years ago. The programme and products are constantly reviewed and improved by Ysonut's scientific committee, based on the latest research into nutrition and weight loss.
How does it work?
By reducing your intake of carbohydrates, the body switches to a state of ketosis where it breaks down body fat and burns it as a main source of energy. This is a very effective way to lose weight healthily. Proteifine is provided only by doctors and nutritionists to ensure it is tailored to your individual needs and is followed correctly to ensure its safety and efficacy.
What will I eat on the Proteifine Diet?
Proteifine consists of a wide range of specially designed foods that are rich in natural proteins but low in carbohydrates. The good news is, they taste surprisingly nice and include plenty of chocolate options! The range includes bars, biscuits, desserts and pancakes as well as savoury foods like pasta, omelettes, toasts and savoury snacks. There's something to suit everyone's taste. Whilst on the Proteifine Diet you can also consume a range of fresh vegetables, herbs, spices and olive oil alongside the Proteifine foods.
Are there any side effects?
Many people worry that they will suffer from hunger and low energy levels on the diet, but this rarely happens. Conversely, most people find that their energy levels improve and their cravings and hunger disappear.
During the first couple of days, before the body enters ketosis, hunger can occur, but this is only temporary. So how does the diet boost energy and prevent hunger? Proteifine products are based on protein, which is satisfying and provides slow-releasing energy, unlike a carbohydrate-based diet which can cause cravings and fluctuations in energy levels. Protein is naturally very satisfying and many of my previously big-portion-loving clients often report that they don't feel the need to eat anywhere near the quantity of food they used to during and after the diet.
Positive side effects of the diet often include improved skin health, reduced cellulite, decrease in digestive issues, improvements in concentration and mental alertness – to name just a few.
Will I suffer from sagging skin after the Proteifine Diet?
Unlike other low-calorie diets, the Proteifine Diet ensures that you are unlikely to end up with sagging skin. This is because the diet provides an optimal amount of easily-digested protein. As your skin collagen and elastin structures are made from proteins, the protein in your diet will support your skin structure and elasticity, helping to prevent sagging skin. Many of my clients see an improvement in skin quality during and after the diet.
Am I likely to regain weight after the Proteifine Diet?
Few things are more frustrating than putting a lot of effort into losing weight, only to put it all back on again after finishing the diet. There are a number of reasons why this is unlikely with Proteifine.
Firstly, it is often due to a loss in muscle mass that your basal metabolic rate (the rate at which you burn calories) is reduced. Due to the protein content of Proteifine, your muscle mass and basal metabolic rate are not only maintained, they can sometimes even increase.
Secondly, nutritional re-education is a key component of the Proteifine Diet. As you gradually reintroduce traditional meals into your diet, you will gain an in-depth understanding of how to eat to optimise your health and maintain your weight long term. Many clients enjoy the Proteifine products so much (especially the bars and chocolate shakes) that they continue to order them long after they have finished the diet. This helps to satisfy a sweet tooth or provide a quick and healthy breakfast/snack, without the consequence of regaining weight.
Finally, I combine the diet with health coaching to uncover self-sabotaging behaviours that have kept you overweight and enable you to form new, healthier habits to make sure your results are maintained long term.
Will I find it hard to stick to the Proteifine Diet?
Most of my clients find the diet much easier to stick to than they expect. The products are tasty and simple to prepare (many require no preparation at all) making it easy to fit around a busy lifestyle. The diet is also tailored to you and your life. You are not committed to sticking to a regimented programme - if you need to eat out at a restaurant, or you wish to eat a home-cooked meal with your family in the evening, the diet can be tailored to allow this. The natural amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine are used to help control cravings and mood swing, regulate appetite and sleep patterns and help optimise your mental state whilst on the diet. Research has shown that incorporating these two nutrients further increases your chances of sticking to the programme.
Is the Proteifine Diet the same as The Atkins Diet?
No, it's not. Ketosis is the metabolic process that is responsible for the rapid weight loss seen with The Atkins Diet - this also occurs with Proteifine. However, there are a number of key differences between Proteifine and Atkins.
The Atkins Diet is a low carbohydrate plan, but the intake of both fat and protein is unlimited. Excessive intake of anything can result in health problems. The Proteifine Diet is a protein-based diet but not a high protein diet. It provides specific amounts of essential fats and less than 40g carbohydrates per day to induce ketosis. This promotes effective, safe and healthy weight loss, focused on maintaining lean body mass (muscle, skin etc) while reducing your body fat. Micronutrient supplementation is provided to ensure you are optimally nourished. Whilst on the diet you will be constantly monitored and supported by a trained health professional (me!)
How much does it cost?
During Phase One when you only consume Proteifine foods (plus vegetables and salads), the food and supplements together cost around £23 per day, depending on which products you choose. If you have a specific budget in mind then I will always do my best to work to this with you.
For the first month, weekly consultations with me are advised. After your first month, you may wish to have consultations every other week. Consultation fees are additional to the cost of the Proteifine products.
